On Wednesday, the European Parliament commemorated the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe with a ceremony attended by three veterans. During the event, European Parliament President Metsola emphasized the significance of remembering not only the end of the war but also “the birth of our Union.” She stated that “the most powerful tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in this war lies not only in remembrance, but in resolve.”
European Council President António Costa expressed gratitude to the veterans for their “sacrifice and commitment to peace.” He acknowledged that current events, such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, have marred peaceful celebrations. Costa urged EU member states and partners to remain united against aggression as a way to honor those who defended freedom 80 years ago. He reminded Europeans that “peace is a heritage, but also a responsibility.”
The ceremony featured speeches from three World War II veterans. Robert Chot, a Belgian veteran of the Battle of Ardennes aged 102, highlighted that peace remains uncertain: “There are always clouds hanging over us. Let us do what is necessary to ensure that peace endures in Europe,” he said.
Polish veteran Janusz Komorowski reflected on Poland’s fight for freedom during WWII and thanked both his wartime generation and the European Parliament for upholding values like peace and democracy.
Janusz Maksymowicz stressed that while battles for freedom persist in new forms today, unity remains crucial: “We know how ruthless ideologies that divide people and nations can be,” he said. He affirmed that strength lies in community among nations respecting diverse traditions and cultures.
The ceremony concluded with a musical performance of the European anthem by a soprano accompanied by a string ensemble. Prior to this plenary event, Presidents Metsola and Costa participated in a flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremony outside Strasbourg’s Parliament building.
