Today in Brussels, a political agreement was reached between President Ursula von der Leyen of the European Commission and President Prabowo Subianto of Indonesia on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). This agreement marks a significant step towards its finalization by September 2025, as indicated by Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič and Coordinating Minister Airlangga Hartarto.

Ursula von der Leyen stated: “Europe and Indonesia are choosing a path of openness, partnership, and shared prosperity. The agreement will open new markets and create more opportunities for our businesses. It will also help strengthen the supply chains of critical raw materials, essential for Europe’s clean tech and steel industry. I now look forward to its swift conclusion.”

Prabowo Subianto remarked: “This is an important moment. After many years of hard work, we have agreed to move forward. For Indonesia, CEPA is not only about trade, it is about fairness, respect, and building a strong future together. The agreement must support our efforts to grow our industries, create jobs, and strengthen our sustainable development goals. We are ready to finalize it soon, in a way that benefits both our peoples.”

The EU-Indonesia agreement aims to enhance trade and investment while fostering inclusive growth and strengthening supply chain resilience. It focuses on cooperation in critical raw materials crucial for both parties’ strategic interests.

Beyond economic ties, both leaders emphasized their commitment to broader bilateral partnerships. A visa cascade decision has been adopted by the Commission to facilitate easier access to multiple-entry visas for Indonesians.

Both leaders also highlighted their dedication to advancing clean energy transitions with initiatives like the Just Energy Transition Partnership supporting Indonesia’s goals.

They reaffirmed their support for international order based on rules, UN cooperation, peace efforts in Ukraine and the Middle East while strengthening ASEAN-EU relations.

Finally, they agreed that shared values such as democracy and human rights should form the foundation for future strategic partnerships between Indonesia and the EU.
