High Representative/Vice-President Kallas, along with Commissioners Kos and Síkela, addressed several significant issues during a recent press briefing. The discussion focused on the EU’s response to a cyber-attack attributed to a Chinese state-backed actor against the Czech Republic, as well as ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
Kallas emphasized that “the EU will not tolerate hostile cyber actions” and expressed solidarity with the Czech Republic. She also criticized Israel’s military actions in Gaza for exceeding necessary measures against Hamas and bypassing UN aid deliveries.
The meeting also covered the adoption of proposals aimed at enhancing EU aid tools. Commissioner Síkela highlighted that these changes could potentially unlock several hundred million euros for external investment and aid. He stated, “This is a smart, strategic update to our financial architecture.”
Additionally, discussions included a new Joint Communication on the Black Sea Strategy. This region holds strategic importance due to its connections between Central Asia and Europe. Kallas noted security concerns arising from Russia’s actions in the area, stating that recurring airspace violations and attacks highlight this reality.
Commissioner Kos elaborated on efforts to boost competitiveness and resilience in response to geopolitical challenges. He underscored the need for diversified energy, transport, and digital links through partnerships with countries in Central Asia and the Black Sea region.
Kos mentioned plans for developing new energy corridors and transport links as part of connectivity initiatives under this strategy. He said these efforts would help “diversify away from Russia” while creating business opportunities.
Furthermore, Kallas proposed establishing a Black Sea Maritime Security Hub as an early warning system to enhance situational awareness and protect critical infrastructure. This initiative aligns with broader goals of strengthening military mobility by upgrading regional ports and other infrastructure.
Overall, these measures reflect ongoing efforts by the European Union to address geopolitical shifts while ensuring security across key regions such as the Black Sea.
