President von der Leyen and Prime Minister Christopher Luxon met in Brussels to discuss the growing partnership between the European Union and New Zealand. Their talks centered on various topics, including trade, technology, security, and global geopolitical issues.

The leaders highlighted the achievements of their relationship, particularly noting the one-year anniversary of the EU–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement. They reaffirmed their commitment to “rules-based free trade” and expressed a desire to modernize the multilateral trading system.

Discussion also included potential collaboration between the EU and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Both agreed on initiating dialogue between these entities soon. Emphasis was placed on securing supply chains for critical raw materials and fostering innovation in technology.

On technological cooperation, New Zealand’s participation in Horizon Europe was praised. Both leaders welcomed further collaboration on digital initiatives like Digital Identity and Digital Business Wallet.

Security concerns were addressed with a focus on deepening ties in the Indo-Pacific region. President von der Leyen proposed enhancing security dialogues as a step toward a Security & Defence Partnership, similar to those with Japan and Korea.

Middle-East tensions were another key topic. Both leaders concurred that “Iran cannot be allowed to develop nuclear weapons” and emphasized diplomacy as essential for resolving regional crises.

The situation in Ukraine was also discussed. President von der Leyen expressed gratitude for New Zealand’s support against Russia’s aggression, highlighting its sanctions against Russia and involvement in Coalition of the Willing discussions. Both leaders committed to pursuing peace in Ukraine.
