Ladies and gentlemen, it is a pleasure to stand here, alongside Federal Councillor – and my friend – Ignazio Cassis.
The Joint Declaration we just signed marks another important step forward in EU-Switzerland relations. It builds on the European Commission’s proposal earlier this month to sign and conclude the comprehensive package of agreements we negotiated last year.
This package is key to modernising and deepening our bilateral relationship as close neighbours and vital trading partners. Once ratified, it will bring real benefits to citizens and businesses on both sides – something truly invaluable at a time when global uncertainty demands stronger partnerships.
“Today’s Declaration reaffirms our shared commitment to strengthen cooperation in critical areas, while the ratification process is underway.”
And that cooperation is already producing tangible results. Let me highlight a few:
“In research, transitional arrangements now allow Swiss entities to apply for Horizon Europe and Euratom Research and Training calls under the 2025 EU budget. Once the agreement is signed – targeted for this year – Swiss participants will gain full access to EU funding.”
“In land transport, we have agreed to extend transitional arrangements with the EU Agency for Railways, ensuring seamless rail traffic between the EU and Switzerland.”
“In health, our priority remains protecting citizens. In the event of serious cross-border threats, the Commission and Switzerland stand ready to coordinate swiftly through ad hoc mechanisms.”
“Today’s Declaration also underlines our shared goal to see the ratification process through. On the EU side, we will support this process fully. And we trust the Federal Council is equally committed.”
“The reality is clear: the package we negotiated between March and December last year is essential. Its ratification would go long way – especially now, when economic and geopolitical challenges require us to stand closer together, not drift apart.”
“I know that with Federal Councillor Cassis, we see eye to eye on this.”
