The European Commission has unveiled its new International Digital Strategy, as presented by Executive Vice-President Virkkunen. This strategy outlines the EU’s vision for external digital action and aims to enhance cooperation on digital priorities with countries worldwide.
Virkkunen emphasized the importance of the EU’s role in a rapidly evolving digital landscape, stating that “the EU is stepping forward as a stable and reliable partner, deeply committed to digital cooperation with our allies and partners.” The strategy responds to a request from the European Council for a joint communication to bolster the EU’s leadership in global digital affairs.
The International Digital Strategy focuses on three main lines of action. Firstly, it seeks to expand international partnerships by deepening existing collaborations with countries such as Japan, Canada, Singapore, India, and South Korea. New partnerships will also be established through a Digital Partnership Network to strengthen tech competitiveness and security.
Secondly, the strategy aims to support the digital transition of partner countries globally. This includes fostering advancements in critical areas like AI, 5G/6G, semiconductors, and quantum technologies. The EU plans to promote social cohesion and uphold democratic principles while strengthening cyber defense capabilities.
Finally, the strategy emphasizes promoting a rules-based global digital order aligned with fundamental values. It highlights cross-cutting priorities such as tech competitiveness, economic security, security and defense.
