The latest Eurobarometer survey indicates a significant rise in trust towards the European Union, reaching its highest level in 18 years. Released today, the survey also shows unprecedented support for the euro and a desire for a more assertive EU through a common defense and security policy. The value of peace continues to be seen as emblematic of the EU.
According to the survey, 52% of Europeans express trust in the EU, marking an 18-year high. Trust is particularly strong among young people aged 15-24, with 59% expressing confidence. Similarly, trust in the European Commission stands at 52%, with young citizens showing higher levels of trust at 57%. In contrast, only 36% of Europeans report trusting their national government, and 37% trust their national parliament.
A record number of respondents (75%) feel they are citizens of the EU, and over six in ten (62%) remain optimistic about its future.
Support for the euro has reached new heights within both the EU (74%) and the euro area (83%). Despite mixed perceptions about Europe’s economic situation—44% view it positively while 48% do not—a majority believes that economic conditions will remain stable over the next year.
The survey reveals that nearly seven out of ten respondents (69%) see the EU as a bastion of stability globally. Additionally, there is widespread agreement on international cooperation; almost nine out of ten Europeans (88%) favor more rules-based collaboration between countries and regions. A substantial majority (86%) believe that increasing customs tariffs harms global economies. However, if other nations raise import duties against EU goods, 80% agree that retaliatory tariffs should be imposed by the EU.
Support for a common defense and security policy among Member States is robust at over eight in ten (81%), reaching its highest level since 2004. There is also considerable concern about defense and security issues over the next five years (78%).
Regarding budget priorities, Europeans suggest spending on defense and security (43%), employment and social affairs (42%), followed by education and culture (34%). Security and defense emerge as top areas where increased funding is desired by citizens.
In terms of medium-term measures for improvement within Europe, respondents prioritize security and defense initiatives (39%), followed by economic strategies (29%), migration policies (24%), alongside climate action efforts equally rated at 24%. Ensuring peace remains crucially important; it tops short-term impacts expected to improve life quality according to respondents.
The response towards Russia’s aggression against Ukraine garners continued support: welcoming refugees from Ukraine into Europe sees approval from eight out of ten participants; financial aid receives
