The Eurogroup press conference saw Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis addressing several pressing issues, including geopolitical developments and the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) Article IV consultations. The commissioner highlighted the impact of recent conflicts in the Middle East, specifically between Iran and Israel, on the global economy. This conflict has contributed to rising oil and gas prices, increasing concerns over energy flows.

Dombrovskis noted that despite these challenges, the European Union’s economy remains resilient. However, he emphasized the necessity for decisive actions to bolster Europe’s competitiveness and secure long-term prosperity. He acknowledged IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva for her insights into economic challenges and policy priorities.

On a positive note, Dombrovskis discussed Bulgaria’s progress towards joining the euro area. He stated that Bulgaria now meets all criteria to become the 21st member of this monetary union. The commissioner expressed satisfaction with euro area Member States’ support for Bulgaria’s entry and anticipates a final decision by July 2025. If approved, Bulgaria could adopt the euro by January 1st, 2026.

Dombrovskis praised Bulgaria’s efforts but stressed the importance of maintaining fiscal discipline beyond 2026 to ensure continued economic resilience. He described Bulgaria’s entry as beneficial not only for Bulgaria but also for the euro area and EU at large.

Another topic on the agenda was the digital euro. Dombrovskis emphasized its potential as an opportunity for Europe’s currency to adapt to digital advancements. He urged member states to reach compromises on remaining issues concerning its implementation, highlighting that current geopolitical shifts offer a chance to enhance Europe’s role in international monetary systems.

The European Commission is prepared to provide technical support needed to advance discussions on this matter.
