The European Commission has unveiled a new Single Market Strategy aimed at enhancing the integration and efficiency of the Single Market. This initiative seeks to address existing barriers that prevent businesses and citizens from fully benefiting from the market’s potential.
“The Single Market is our European home market,” the Commission stated, emphasizing its role as a driver of growth and prosperity in Europe. Despite its achievements, the market remains fragmented, necessitating this comprehensive strategy to ease business operations and investments across borders.
The strategy introduces measures to tackle ten significant barriers, referred to as the “terrible ten.” These include complicated business establishment processes, overly complex EU rules, and restrictive national services regulations. The Commission plans to simplify these areas through digitalization and harmonization efforts.
Additionally, the strategy proposes initiatives for specific sectors like construction and postal services, aiming to modernize regulatory frameworks. The Commission also highlights support for SMEs with tools like an online SME ID tool to facilitate compliance with EU rules.
Digitalization is a key focus, with proposals for developing a Single Digital Gateway and implementing a Digital Product Passport. These measures aim to streamline administrative tasks and enhance information accessibility for businesses.
To ensure effective enforcement of Single Market rules, the Commission suggests appointing “Single Market Sherpas” in each EU country. These representatives will promote rule application and help remove national barriers.
Overall, this strategy aims to strengthen Europe’s position globally by fostering a more integrated and efficient Single Market.
