The European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs has selected its preferred candidate for the position of European Chief Prosecutor. During a secret ballot held on Wednesday, committee members cast their votes for four shortlisted candidates to lead the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO).
Andrés Ritter received the most support with 46 votes. Stefano Castellani followed with 11 votes, Emilio Jesús Sánchez Ulled received 7 votes, and Ingrid Maschl-Clausen garnered 4 votes.
Prior to the vote, each candidate participated in a question-and-answer session with Members of the European Parliament (MEPs). The hearing included presentations by all candidates and provided an opportunity for MEPs to ask questions about their qualifications and vision for the office.
The appointment process requires both the European Parliament and the Council to reach a common agreement on the final selection. Both institutions have already indicated preliminary support for Andrés Ritter. The next step will be a formal vote in Parliament scheduled for early 2026.
Laura Codruța Kövesi is currently serving as the first-ever European Chief Prosecutor, having been appointed in October 2019. Her seven-year term is set to conclude on October 31, 2026.
