In a resolution, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have condemned Russia’s ongoing war crimes in Ukraine and expressed support for the International Criminal Court’s investigations. The resolution was approved with 507 votes in favor, 77 against, and 45 abstentions.

The text highlights that Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine since February 2022 has disrupted peace and stability in Europe and undermined global security. It states that Russia is the most significant threat to European security and holds sole responsibility for its aggression. MEPs are outraged by Russia’s attacks on civilians and infrastructure in Ukraine, noting that these actions may be part of a genocidal strategy.

The resolution also mentions the human cost of the conflict, with over 70,000 Ukrainians missing. Ukrainian authorities report around 16,000 civilians detained by Russian forces. MEPs condemn the execution of Ukrainian prisoners of war as violations of international law. They support the International Criminal Court’s investigations into these crimes and welcome an agreement between the Council of Europe and Ukraine to establish a Special Tribunal for Aggression.

MEPs call for those responsible for war crimes to be held accountable and urge Russia to agree to an exchange of prisoners of war. They believe more effective military, economic, political, and diplomatic measures are needed from the EU and partners to pressure Russia into ending its aggression. Additionally, they advocate for confiscating Russian state assets to support Ukraine.
