On Tuesday, the European Parliament will hold an extraordinary plenary session to mark four years since Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is scheduled to address Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) via remote connection from Kyiv.
The session is set to begin at 10:15, after which MEPs will discuss ongoing developments in Russia’s war against Ukraine and examine the role of Europe in supporting a just peace and long-term security for Ukraine. A resolution related to these topics will be voted on at 11:30.
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola emphasized the significance of this gathering, stating that it would send an “important signal” regarding the European Union’s continued support for Ukraine.
Since February 2022, both the EU and the European Parliament have shown steady backing for Ukraine by condemning Russian actions, imposing sanctions on Russia, and providing various forms of aid including financial, political, military, and humanitarian assistance. On February 11, Parliament approved a €90 billion loan from the EU for Ukraine.
The relationship between Parliament and Ukraine has deepened over time. In September 2025, a permanent presence was established in Kyiv. President Metsola has made visits to both Kyiv and the Verkhovna Rada. Additionally, President Zelenskyy has addressed Parliament multiple times.
Parliament has expressed strong support for Ukraine’s efforts toward joining the EU. MEPs have recognized Ukraine’s progress under difficult conditions and urged Ukrainian authorities to continue reforms. They also called on the European Commission to accelerate negotiations with Ukraine about EU membership.
The session can be followed live online.
