On the fourth anniversary of Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, G7 leaders have reaffirmed their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The statement emphasizes backing for efforts led by President Trump to start a peace process, bringing both parties into direct negotiations. “We express our continued support for President Trump’s efforts to achieve these objectives by initiating a peace process and bringing the parties to direct discussions,” the leaders said. They also highlighted Europe’s central role in this process, along with participation from other international partners.

The G7 also reiterated their commitment to providing security guarantees to Ukraine through the Coalition of the Willing. According to the statement, only direct negotiations between Ukraine and Russia can lead to a peace agreement: “We acknowledge that only Ukraine and Russia, working together in good faith negotiations, can reach a peace agreement.”

Recent weeks have seen significant financial and material aid delivered to help Ukraine cope with winter challenges. The G7 countries have sent more than 2,500 generators and various equipment such as transformers, turbines, cogeneration units, boilers, and repair materials since January. In addition, new pledges exceeding half a billion euros have been made to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund for repairing and protecting critical infrastructure. The statement notes: “A resilient and robust energy system will be needed ahead of next winter and for the country’s recovery.”

In nuclear safety matters, G7 leaders committed to collaborating with organizations including the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development on fundraising efforts aimed at rehabilitating Chornobyl’s containment arch as soon as possible. Their goal is also to prevent radiological incidents that could impact all of Europe.

Support was expressed for initiatives facilitating the safe return of Ukrainian children displaced by conflict. The work of the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children was specifically commended.

The G7 concluded by stating their intention to continue humanitarian assistance for Ukrainians affected by ongoing hostilities.
