The European Parliament’s Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality held a public hearing on Wednesday as part of Gender Equality Week 2025, focusing on the topic of women’s leadership in politics.
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola opened the event, stating: “Europe is built by people who decide to get involved in politics and make their voices heard. But all too often, women feel excluded from the big decisions and locked out of power. That’s why Europe needs more women to enter politics and run for office. Because to make our Union work for everyone, we need equality of opportunity and more female voices in leadership.”
During the hearing, MEPs and invited experts discussed ongoing challenges that women face when seeking political roles across Europe. The discussion noted that only three women have served as President of the European Parliament since 1978. Speakers highlighted the importance of creating support systems that allow women to balance political careers with family responsibilities. Suggestions included implementing proxy voting for Members of European Parliament (MEPs) who are on maternity leave.
The event was organized to emphasize the need for greater inclusivity in political representation throughout Europe. The debate can be rewatched online.
