The European Parliament’s co-rapporteurs, Sandro Gozi and Tiemo Wölken, are set to address the media following the European Commission’s decision to withdraw the Green Claims Directive legislative proposal. The Council has consequently canceled the trilogue that was scheduled for Monday.

Gozi, representing the Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection, and Wölken from the Committee on the Environment, Climate and Food Safety will present their reactions at a press conference today at 15:15 CEST. The event will take place in the Anna Politkovskaya press conference room at the European Parliament in Brussels.

Accredited media representatives can attend in person, while journalists wishing to participate remotely can do so via Interactio. The press conference will also be streamed live on the Parliament’s Multimedia Centre and will remain available as a recording.

The Green Claims Directive was initially proposed by the Commission in March 2023 with an aim to make environmental marketing more reliable across Europe. The directive sought to protect consumers from misleading environmental claims by requiring companies to submit evidence-backed claims for assessment by national accredited verifiers before using them in marketing. It also aimed to regulate environmental labelling schemes within Europe.

Parliament adopted its first reading position on March 12, 2024, followed by the Council agreeing on its stance on June 17, 2024. Negotiations commenced in January 2025 with an anticipated conclusion during today’s now-canceled meeting.
