King Abdullah II of Jordan addressed Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) during a formal sitting in Strasbourg on Tuesday. His speech focused on global conflicts, with particular emphasis on the situation in Gaza.
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola welcomed King Abdullah II, acknowledging Jordan as “not only a great friend to this Parliament but an important partner for the European Union.” She praised Jordan’s efforts in promoting stability and peace in the Middle East, emphasizing its role in reducing regional tensions and facilitating humanitarian aid.
The King expressed concern over the state of global affairs, stating that “our world feels untethered – like it has lost its moral gravity.” He emphasized the need to recommit to shared values, warning that losing moral bearings leads to conflict. He remarked, “a shameful version of our humanity is unfolding before our eyes in real time (…) Nowhere is that clearer than in Gaza.”
Addressing the Israeli attacks in Gaza, he questioned how atrocities have become commonplace and criticized actions such as weaponizing famine and targeting civilians. “We are at another crossroads in our history (…) It is a struggle over who we are as a global community,” he said.
King Abdullah II called for pivotal decisions globally, stressing Europe’s leadership role. He identified two key areas for action: supporting development for mutual benefits and ensuring global security through coordinated action.
He highlighted unresolved conflicts, mentioning Ukraine and the longstanding Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The King asserted that Palestinians deserve “the rights to freedom, sovereignty, and, yes, statehood,” urging courage and willpower to pursue peace.
This address marks King Abdullah II’s sixth plenary speech at the European Parliament since 2002.
