In a keynote address at the “Europe at the crossroads” event, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola outlined her vision for a transformed Europe. She emphasized that Europe must move forward collectively, suggesting a shift towards more realistic and self-critical approaches with reduced regulation and increased innovation.

Metsola stressed the need for political courage in an era of hyper-polarization, warning against ignoring signs of political instability. She stated, “We need the resolve – the political courage – to show that we are still a continent on the rise.”

Focusing on competitiveness, Metsola called for simplifying bureaucracy to foster innovation and business growth. She noted that Europe’s simplification agenda should initiate an economic boom with the upcoming Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF).

Highlighting trade relations, she advocated for comprehensive deals with global partners such as the United States, Canada, and post-Brexit United Kingdom. Metsola remarked on maintaining strong alliances: “A comprehensive deal should be the end goal of negotiations with the United States.”

Addressing security concerns, Metsola called for increased defence spending while emphasizing strategic long-term planning over short-term gains. She underscored unity among member states to ensure Europe’s readiness in an unstable world.

Concluding her speech on a hopeful note, Metsola reiterated Europe’s potential as a leading global power: “Europe is still the greatest political project in history… We have no short of capacity, talent, capital, people and innovators – to lead and renew.”
