The European Parliament has published findings from its latest Eurobarometer survey, indicating that most EU citizens want the Union to play a stronger role in protecting them against global crises and security threats. According to the survey, 68% of respondents support an increased EU role in this area.

The survey also shows that 90% of Europeans believe member states should be more united, while 77% think the EU needs greater resources to address current global challenges. Respondents highlighted defence and security (37%) and economic competitiveness (32%) as key areas for the EU to focus on, given ongoing political and economic uncertainty. Inflation, rising prices, and the cost of living remain top concerns for citizens, with 41% citing these issues as priorities for the European Parliament.

In terms of funding, nearly eight out of ten respondents (78%) believe that more projects should be financed collectively by the EU rather than by individual member states. Transparency remains important for citizens; 91% say that the European Parliament must have all necessary information and tools to properly oversee EU spending. Additionally, 85% agree that funds provided to member states should depend on adherence to rule of law and democratic principles.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola commented: “EU citizens want Europe to focus on security and the economy. They look to the EU for stability and expect a strong and united European voice in today’s uncertain world. Our priorities and the EU’s next long-term budget must therefore allow the Union to tackle new geopolitical realities. Parliament has listened and now, we must put our money where our mouth is, invest in what matters and deliver for our citizens.”

Survey results also indicate that nearly three-quarters (72%) feel that actions taken by the EU impact their daily lives; half view this impact positively. Furthermore, 73% believe their country benefits from being an EU member—citing peace protection (37%), improved cooperation among countries (36%), and contributions to economic growth (29%).

The Spring 2025 Eurobarometer was conducted by Verian research agency between May 5th and May 29th across all 27 member states through face-to-face interviews or video calls in certain countries. The sample included over 26,000 participants weighted according to national population sizes.
