President von der Leyen has issued a statement expressing her support for the Budapest Pride and the LGBTIQ+ community. She emphasized that in Europe, marching for one’s rights is a fundamental freedom, affirming, “You have the right to love who you want to love and be exactly who you are.”

Von der Leyen highlighted that equality and non-discrimination are core values of the European Union, enshrined in its Treaties. She urged respect for these principles across all Member States.

The President called on Hungarian authorities to ensure that the Budapest Pride can proceed without fear of criminal or administrative sanctions against organizers or participants. She assured the LGBTIQ+ community in Hungary and beyond of her unwavering support, stating, “I will always be your ally.”

Von der Leyen concluded by recognizing the contributions of the LGBTIQ+ community to Europe, saying, “Europe is stronger and richer because of you.” Her message was one of solidarity: “I am on your side. Today and every day.”
