The Members of the European Court of Auditors (ECA) have confirmed Tony Murphy as President for another three-year term. Murphy, who is from Ireland, has been a Member of the ECA since 2018 and began serving as its President in October 2022. His new term will start on 1 October 2025.
The ECA’s Members elect their President from among themselves for a renewable period of three years. The role involves overseeing corporate strategy, planning and performance management, communication and media relations, legal matters, internal audit, and representing the institution externally.
“The ECA is the European Union’s independent external auditor. Its reports and opinions are an essential element of the EU accountability chain, and are used to hold to account those responsible for implementing EU policies and programmes: the Commission, other EU institutions and bodies, and member state governments. The ECA warns of risks, provides assurance, flags up shortcomings and good practices, and offers guidance to policymakers and legislators on how to improve the management of EU policies and programmes.”
Murphy’s re-election means he will continue to lead these activities at a time when oversight of EU spending remains under close scrutiny.
