On Tuesday, Annalena Baerbock, President of the United Nations General Assembly, addressed Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) in Strasbourg. She called on the European Union to maintain strong support for the United Nations and uphold the international rules-based order during a period marked by global crises.
Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, welcomed Baerbock and stated: “80 years on from the founding of the United Nations, this is a moment to renew our commitment to multilateralism as a force for good in the world – one that keeps us safer, freer and better off. In a more uncertain world, we need to double down on our commitment that cooperation and dialogue between nations delivers better results than confrontation.”
In her speech, Baerbock urged EU countries to remain steadfast amid geopolitical tensions and conflicts. She highlighted the importance of defending truth and democracy against misinformation and disinformation used as political tools. Baerbock warned that online deepfakes targeting women threaten democratic societies.
She also stressed Europe’s duty to act together in protecting international law. Referring to the EU’s unified response following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine four years ago, she said Europe’s actions had global impact. According to Baerbock, “the world is calling on the EU to forge cross-regional alliances to protect and uphold the UN Charter and international law.”
Baerbock noted recent trade agreements with Mercosur and India as well as increased EU funding for Africa’s Continental Free Trade Area. She described these efforts as investments in long-term global prosperity and security.
The UN faces financial challenges, which Baerbock addressed by asking for robust EU backing for ongoing reforms known as UN80. She called on member states to pay their dues promptly, support reform proposals, and engage in discussions about international financial reform needed for achieving Sustainable Development Goals and supporting commitments made to developing countries. Reaffirming her stance on gender equality, she said EU countries should actively support nominating women for Secretary-General of the United Nations—a position held only by men since its creation 80 years ago.
Baerbock was elected President of the General Assembly in September 2025 with a platform focused on unity during crises. Her priorities include implementing reforms under UN80, strengthening effectiveness within the organization, advancing sustainable development goals set for 2030, increasing engagement with civil society and youth groups, and promoting gender equality.
She is only the fifth woman ever elected president of this body. Previously she served as Germany’s Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs from December 2021 until May 2025; she was also a member of Germany’s parliament from 2013 through June 2025 and co-chaired Germany’s Green Party between 2018 and 2022.
