The European Political Community Summit opened with a speech by President von der Leyen, addressing the significant geopolitical changes Europe is currently facing. She emphasized that “the changes we are living through are historic” and highlighted the challenges posed by geopolitical struggles, notably mentioning “Putin’s imperialist ambitions.”
President von der Leyen remarked on Europe’s resilience in recent crises such as the pandemic, climate change, energy issues, and Russia’s war against Ukraine. She noted that these challenges have brought Europe closer together and reinforced its support for Ukraine: “Europe has stood united in its unwavering support to Ukraine.”
The president stressed the importance of continued unity and cooperation within the European Political Community (EPC), particularly regarding sanctions on Russia. These measures have significantly impacted Russia’s economy, with falling oil and gas revenues and rising inflation. Von der Leyen stated, “we are ready to do more to bring President Putin to the negotiation table,” indicating ongoing efforts for peace.
Von der Leyen also discussed future strategies for building a prosperous Europe through connectivity projects like the Ukraine Facility and Growth Plan for Western Balkans and Moldova. The aim is to enhance cross-border infrastructure and digital links across Europe.
She concluded her address by expressing confidence in Europe’s ability to tackle challenges collectively: “It is with confidence, hope and determination that I can say: long live Europe.”
