President Ursula von der Leyen met with Chinese Premier Li Qiang to discuss the ongoing relationship between the European Union and China. The meeting follows their previous engagement in Beijing in July.
During the talks, President von der Leyen emphasized the importance of trust, mutual understanding, and ongoing dialogue between the two economic powers. “We are two of the world’s largest economic powers – a very consequential relationship for our people, businesses and the entire world. We agree that this relationship must be built on trust, mutual understanding and constant dialogue,” she stated.
She noted her appreciation for continued discussions: “Therefore, I am glad that we have the chance to meet here today. The meeting shows that we are both committed to this. This is good. Today, we will discuss the follow-up on our Summit commitments.”
Trade relations were a key topic at the meeting. President von der Leyen described it as productive and outlined plans for future cooperation: “On trade, it was a very productive meeting. Today, we will discuss setting up a working structure to deliver on the outcome of the Summit and to already prepare for next year’s summit.”
The leaders also addressed international issues including Russia’s war against Ukraine. Von der Leyen highlighted China’s potential influence in seeking resolution: “We will certainly discuss Russia’s war against Ukraine and the possibility of China to use its significant influence to bring Russia to the negotiating table.”
Climate change was another focus area ahead of COP30. Von der Leyen stressed global expectations: “And as you, rightly so, said on climate: The world is looking at us. Let us strengthen our cooperation and join forces to make COP30 a success.”
